Logistics across Southern China is experiencing significant disruption following Super Typhoon Ragasa, which struck Guangdong province and the Pearl River Delta earlier this week with winds of up to 125 mph.
The storm forced temporary closures at major seaports and airports, while many factories and businesses suspended operations for safety.
The disruption comes at a particularly challenging moment, with China’s Golden Week holiday (October 1st–7th) just around the corner.
In the lead-up to the holiday, factories traditionally close from September 30th, driving exporters to expedite orders in the week ahead of the holiday period. This year, however, those last-minute pushes have been severely interrupted.
Both ocean and air freight are facing delays, and some shipments may not move until after the holiday period. While port terminals began reopening yesterday, the aftermath of the storm is expected to cause ongoing challenges for ocean freight, including congestion, vessel bunching, and cargo backlogs.
Global Freight Services continues to closely monitor developments and will keep clients updated on any shipment-specific delays. Customers with urgent or time-sensitive cargo are encouraged to reach out to the team for support.
