Red Sea Ship Explosion Not Believed To Be Houthi Rebels

The vessel ASL Bauhinia suffered an explosion on board this week while travelling in the Red Sea, but reports now suggest this is not the work of Houthi Rebels.

The 2,000 teu containership was just 140 miles south of the port city of Hodeida in Yemen, controlled by the rebel group, which led to immediate suspicions of a missile attack.

A fire broke out onboard the Hong Kong flagged vessel following Wednesday’s explosion, which spiralled out of control and eventually led to the crew having to abandon ship, before being rescued by a passing vessel.

Houthi Rebels are currently limiting their attacks on commercial vessels to those owned or linked to Israel while the Gaza ceasefire continues, as we covered in this recent article.

However, in a strange twist of fate, the ship was partially operated by Israeli carrier ZIM up until September, according to reports in The Loadstar.

While circumstances may have been pointing towards another Houthi attack, widespread media reports are now stating that unspecified dangerous goods onboard the vessel have caused the explosion.

In fact, numerous ship fires have been attributed to dangerous goods during the past couple of years, so this does seem to be a plausible explanation.
