Freight movements through parts of France and Spain continue to face disruption as wildfires, extreme temperatures and changing road restrictions affect regional transport networks.
Temperatures exceeding 40°C have returned to south-west France, while prolonged heat and dry conditions across Spain are increasing the possibility of fires spreading or previously controlled areas reigniting.
In France, road closures and emergency measures have affected routes around Bordeaux, the Arcachon basin and neighbouring areas. Some transport operators have been forced to use alternative roads, extending journey times and creating additional uncertainty around planned collections and deliveries. Diversions may also increase operating costs through higher fuel use and longer driver hours.
Road freight in Spain has encountered similar difficulties. Disruption has been reported around Madrid, Ávila and Toledo, as well as Castellón on the eastern coast. Restrictions may be introduced, removed or changed at short notice as emergency services respond to developing conditions.
The impact is not limited to transport delays. Cargo stored or moving near affected locations may be exposed to smoke, soot and ash. This creates an increased risk of contamination or packaging damage, particularly for sensitive goods such as food products, clothing and textiles.
UK businesses importing from or exporting to affected regions should allow additional time within their schedules and remain prepared for route changes and delayed deliveries.
