Global container shipping operations are facing renewed pressure as port congestion builds across several key port regions. Longer vessel queues, restricted berth availability, busy terminals and rising cargo volumes are all contributing to delays across major trade lanes.
Market reports suggest port congestion is now at its highest level in four years, with around 11% of global fleet capacity regularly waiting for berthing space.
The Middle East is currently one of the most affected areas. Delays connected to recent backlogs from the Strait of Hormuz are adding to congestion across regional ports, with Jeddah becoming a notable pressure point. Reports indicate that truck queues at the Saudi port have extended up to three miles, with some drivers waiting as long as three days to collect or return containers.
Pressure is also increasing across Asia, where an earlier-than-usual peak season is placing additional strain on ports in North Asia and Southeast Asia. This is feeding into wider disruption on global routes, including services into Northern Europe. Market reports suggest port congestion is now at its highest level in four years, with around 11% of global fleet capacity regularly waiting for berthing space.
Several major Asian export gateways, including Shanghai and Singapore, are experiencing vessel delays, with waiting times reported at up to three days.
Northern Europe is also seeing ongoing congestion at many of its largest container ports. Late vessel arrivals, high yard density and pressure on inland transport networks are combining to slow cargo flows. Hamburg is currently seeing delays of around three days, Antwerp approximately four days and Zeebrugge around six days.
Rotterdam is experiencing shorter vessel waiting times by comparison, although import and export dwell times remain higher than usual. In the UK, Felixstowe and Southampton are each reported to be facing vessel waits of up to three days.
In light of these conditions, and the ongoing capacity issues, Global Freight Services strongly advises customers to book shipments as early as possible to help minimise the risk of delay.
