In the world of logistics, there is often an underlying narrative of complexities and challenges that are not often visible to the customer’s eye. It is easy to point fingers when things don’t go according to plan, especially when there are delays or hiccups along the way.
However, it is essential to understand that the freight forwarding process is a delicate balance of timing, regulations, and problem-solving that requires an experienced team.
A shipment handled by Global Freight Services beautifully demonstrates this balance, showcasing how it’s not always the freight forwarder’s fault when things go awry, and how persistence and collaboration across global networks can often make the difference.
Our team recently completed the successful air freight transport of a custom Honda Goldwing trike to Egypt for a VIP client. After converting the bike into a three-wheeled trike, the UK-based business sold it to a VIP buyer in Egypt.
Global Freight Services carefully packed the trike into a wooden crate, adhering to IATA regulations, and transported it to the airline via a dedicated vehicle to meet their tight deadline. The journey began smoothly with the shipment being loaded to a freighter flight from London Heathrow (LHR) just ahead of time.
However, due to an error by said airline, caused by their own confusion, the cargo was removed from its original scheduled freighter flight, causing the first delay. After several discussions, the shipment was then booked to Istanbul for transhipment on to Egypt.
Further setbacks then became apparent, as the airline mistakenly booked the crate onto a passenger aircraft which was incapable of stowing a shipment of its size. Global Freight Services worked tirelessly with the airline to eventually resolve the problem. After five days of frustrating and unnecessary delays, the shipment successfully landed at Cairo.
Navigating Egypt’s complex customs clearance process presents a challenge at the best of times, but this movement introduced another layer of difficulty as importing motor vehicles is notoriously difficult.
Thankfully, Global Freight Services had partnered with trusted and like minded agent – KDM Global Logistics – and both parties worked diligently day and night to fast-track the customs process.
These procedures included the usual formalities of submitting an import declaration and getting duties and taxes calculated and paid, but also required us to arrange inspection through the Atomic Board of Egypt, registration of the vehicle for road use and Telecommunications Board inspection.
In the end, the hard work at the Egyptian end allowed the trike to be cleared, registered, and delivered to the VIP client in line with the original delivery schedule, despite the obstacles.
We felt we should share this short story as it reinforces an important message for anyone moving goods internationally: the right logistics provider can make all the difference. With a trusted network, expert knowledge, and a commitment to solving problems, even the most complex obstacles can often be overcome.
At Global Freight Services, it’s not just about shipping goods—it’s about ensuring a smooth and seamless experience, no matter the challenges.
